Frequently Asked Questions
Do you work remotely or on site?
Mainly remotely, from Cyprus (EU). I work in German and English, and you reach me by chat and video call throughout your project.
My office is in Paphos, on the south-west coast of the Republic of Cyprus, a member state of the European Union since 2004. Cyprus is one hour ahead of Central European Time all year, which suits clients across Europe. For kick-off meetings and workshops I come on site; good flight connections make that possible at short notice.
Companies in other EU countries, for example Germany, receive my invoices under the EU reverse-charge procedure. The procedure is the same across the EU, so your accounting handles my invoices like those of any other EU supplier.
How do you run a project?
- Process: Agile, either lightweight with a Kanban board (Trello) or with Scrum and a product backlog (Jira). Work is split into prioritised increments, so you see working results after every iteration.
- Architecture: Designed along the AWS Well-Architected Framework: scalable with the load and redundant, so the failure of a single component does not stop the solution. Written as infrastructure as code, so every environment can be rebuilt at any time.
- Delivery: Code lives in Git repositories (GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket); CI/CD pipelines deploy it to at least three environments (Dev, Test, Prod), ideally in separate AWS accounts.
- Documentation: Architecture diagrams, architecture decision records, solution designs and commented code, as much as your team needs to run the solution.
- Governance: Security, cost control and automated operations are part of every project from the first increment, not added at the end.
Which technologies do you use?
- Infrastructure as code: AWS CDK in TypeScript or Python, or Terraform.
- Compute: Serverless first (Lambda, Fargate); EC2 clusters with automated maintenance and scaling where a workload needs them.
- Backend: TypeScript or Python for Lambda services; TypeScript (Node.js), Java (Spring Boot) or Go (Gin) for larger container services on Fargate, behind an API layer built from AWS components.
- Frontend: React, delivered via S3 and CloudFront. My focus is backend and infrastructure.
Which data, IoT and AI solutions do you build?
- Data platforms: Data lakes on S3 with Glue, Athena and Redshift, streaming with Kinesis, access control with Lake Formation, from a single pipeline to a platform that takes in hundreds of terabytes a day.
- IoT: Devices and plants send their data through AWS IoT Core; I collect, store and process it for monitoring and control, for example of energy plants.
- Machine learning: Training and hosting of models with SageMaker, on the data of the platform.
- Generative AI: LLM applications with Amazon Bedrock, for example assistants that answer from your own documents.
